Building A New Pool? Why Secure Fencing Is So Important

Blog

If you're moving into a new property and intend to install a swimming pool, you need to pay very close attention to safety. As part of this approach, you will certainly need to install a pool fence, and this needs to be done properly and in conformation with the appropriate rules. What do you need to know about this crucial task?

Analysing Statistics

It's a sobering statistic, but on average, six children drown in private swimming pools each year in New South Wales alone. This is despite stringent regulations and is often due to the parents leaving these kids by themselves.

Dealing with Regulation

Regulators want to try and reduce these figures as much as possible, which is why they have regulations that govern pool fencing requirements. If you want to install your own, you must add child-resistant barriers in most cases and should always work with an experienced contractor to get the job done correctly.

Focusing on Safety Standards

If you take New South Wales as an example, there are three different safety standards, depending on when the pool was initially constructed. In the case of a new pool, there is no ambiguity. The pool must be surrounded by a fence that separates it entirely from the house.

Turning to Construction

It's also worth bearing in mind that you are responsible for securing the pool even while it is under construction. In this case, you will need a certain type of complaint barrier up until the time when the building certifier gives you a final occupancy document. You must also ensure that signage is erected, clearly stating that the pool must not be used or occupied.

Understanding Specific Rules

When it comes to the actual, permanent pool fence, the rules give specific dimensions, including any gaps that may appear between ground level and the bottom of the fence itself. You must also ensure that there is no "climbable" zone around the fence. You may therefore need to remove shrubs, trees or other man-made objects that an enterprising child could use to gain access to the pool area. Further, ensure that nothing inside the pool area is close to the fence, which could be used to gain access from the top of the fence to the pool deck.

Working with Experienced Contractors

If you work with a competent fencing company, they'll explain all the details to you. They'll also ensure that the fence is built following these rules and get the government's permission before work gets underway. For more information on pool fencing, contact a company near you.

How to Choose Security Fencing

If you want a security fence, you probably want to keep something safely inside the fence and/or something (or someone!) outside of it. That’s the easy bit. Choosing the right security fencing for your needs can be a bit more difficult. For example, before you can buy the right fencing, you need to think about all kinds of stuff from the size of the fence to the material it’s made of. In some cases, you may also want to add security extras like anti-climb features. I created this blog to cover the ins and outs of security fencing in more detail. Hopefully, it’ll help you learn more about how to choose the right fencing for your security problem.
